Breaks FM party
June 2, 2000

Following a spate of rammed breakbeat sweat-a-thons in the pressure cooker environs of The Bug Bar in Brixton, the guys behind Breaks FM (the world's only radio station devoted entirely to the genius of the breakbeat?) are rolling out the concept in an attempt to wake Londoners into the realisation of the indigenous movement that is gaining more support worldwide than in its own back yard.

While four-to-the-floor music bashes out from a myriad of venues across the capital on a Friday night, the Imperial Gardens in Camberwell plays host to a night of full-on breakbeat energy- a relentless barrage of beats and basslines from some of the leading lights of the UK batch of DJs and producers who are living and breathing this music.

The driving force of this night, and the radio station itself, are Klaus from Tek-Ed and the Sonz of Mecha, all of whom have combined in the determination to drum up a movement in the capital to raise interest and awareness of what breakbeat is all about, and most importantly to get people through the doors and going mental on the dancefloor. Finding the right venue, as Klaus explains, has been one of the major obstacles, and the turn-out tonight is a little disappointing, although the jacking dancefloor stay happily oblivious throughout the night due to the sheer quality and energy of the music.

Dez Ingram (Makesome Breaksome) lays the foundations early on by hoisting bodies away from the bar and into the compelling thrust of a vibe that is maintained all night, with a storming final set from Klaus, right through until the last few people on the dancefloor have to be ushered gently away towards their beds. Look out for these parties, tune in to the station, and watch it grow and grow.

Breaks FM is broadcasting in the London area at 103.2FM
