Well some people said it could not be done, running
a weekly breakbeat night on a Thursday in Reading, and
one year down the line, how wrong they were! For that
is what
Beats Working has achieved and to be honest it just
doesn’t seem like its been a year. Well they do
say times fly when you're having fun...
Starting out a year ago in the downstairs bar of the
Fez Club beats working has gone from strenth to strenth
and has built a regular crowd of followers over the
past year and also had some special guests like Hyper,
Koma & Bones, BLIM and even played host to one of
the rare UK gigs by Salim Rafiq and Dave Tipper from
Fuel Records. After recently moving to the bigger venue
that is Po Na Na they decided (in true Beats Working
style) to book somebody who is an old favourite on the
Reading scene - the one they call Krafty
Kuts.
Turning up at the club at about 9:30, you could tell
this was going be a busy night. The drinks were cold
and the atmosphere was hot. Getting to the dance floor,
DJ Tim Rodway
was warming up the crowd with his special blend of hiphop
and breaks leading up to Jurassik
taking to the controls with a nicely leftfield set warming
up to the man himself.
By this time the dancefloor was alight - well it was
bloody hot - and Krafty started by taking it down a
notch and teasing the croud with some hiphop classics
in the usual Krafty Kuts way. However this was short-lived
and soon he was throwing down the latest tune from his
label and other breakbeat monsters. One strange but
cool thing was to see the bar completely deserted, not
due to an empty venue but due to everybody wanting to
shake their booty.
As we got towards the end of the night the crowd were
left screaming for more in what could only be called
a very pleasing night indeed.
