Following a strong month of bookings that have seen performances from 2 Dogs, EK, Bass Kleph and Kid Kenobi, Out of Order was in fine form on this night with DJ Hyper making his only appearance in Melbourne. This weekly night of funky broken beats has developed quite a strong local following so it was no surprise to see the place absolutely packed to catch a set from Bedrock's very own Hyper.

Arriving just after midnight, I strolled in and caught the last few songs from top breakbeat/techno funkstress, DJ Ides. She whipped the crowd around with a sweet blend of bootlegs and housey beats and showed why she has quietly become one of the top DJs in Melbourne. Up next was Melbourne's very own internationally known DJ/producer EK. Dropping a few of his own tracks and remixes into the mix, "Brothers Love Dub" being the highlight, he wowed the crowd for an hour in lead-up to DJ Hyper.

Hyper lost his records but was able to borrow someone else's records and still managed to pull of a mind-blowing 2-hour set

A little bit of background is needed to properly describe the set that was played by Hyper on this night. When he flew into Melbourne, he had the unfortunate experience of having his records lost by the airline. Not being one to throw in the towel, he hooked up with Drew over at Boston Sound Records and Drew, being the kind soul that he is, agreed to let Hyper borrow an entire box of records for the night, most of which were from his personal collection.

Knowing all of this, I was expecting a bit of a slow start, but Hyper had other plans. He immediately came in with a huge set of mind-blowing, harder breaks and never let up for his entire 2-hour set. Dropping many tunes from his own label, Terminalhead being a staple all night, he had the crowd literally jumping all over each other. Sweating through a set filled with crowd favorites like Soul of Man, Stir Fry and the Plump DJs, he left little time for rest and if the mist coming off the walls was any indication, there was going to be some exhausted punters driving home later.

Finishing off the night were Nick Thayer and Ben Shepherd, who kept the floor going strong until closing. It was definitely one of the best shows of the year and should keep all the breakbeat heads content for the two weeks we have off until B.L.I.M. makes his return.
