Rapidly becoming one of the premiere breaks parties
in Melbourne, Beats Working represents everything that
is good about a vibrant and healthy breakbeat scene.
Since starting just over 6 months ago, this crew has
consistently gotten better with each consecutive show.
Sporting an unknown cast of breakbeat enthusiasts, they've
managed to draw well over 300 people to each one of
their monthly events and this night was no different.
Beginning the evening was Hans-D.C.,
who got the crowd on the floor with a mixture of mid-tempo
funkiness, ol skool electro beats and a collection of
bootlegs and white labels to die for. After a killer
Fatboy Slim remix, he really got the crowd into it with
Soul Of Man's "Dirty Waltzer" (the current
fave of just about every Melbourne DJ at the moment)
and finished his set off with the absolutely perfect
Chicken Lips' "He Not In". His seamless mixing
and eclectic record selection planted the seeds for
what would become a momentous evening.
Obliveus was up
next and, quite simply put, he rocked it. By the time
he got to his third song, the dance floor was packed
and going off with sweaty bodies piling on top of one
another like a game of Twister. Fat beats, humungous
bass lines and party rhymes (provided by MC
Direkt) kept the crowd wiggling til' the
end of his set and if the soaked shirt on his back was
any indication, Obliveus had just as much fun dancing
behind the decks as the crowd did on the dance floor.
Coming on after this would've been a tough task for
most, but Scotrod
proceeded to take the party to another universe. Breakin'
open the mayhem, he whipped the masses on the dance
floor into a frenzy. Cuttin' and scratchin' his way
(a la Krafty Kuts) through a set that was both housey
and tribal, the man was in a zone. A surprise guest
appearance from MC Rhino
caused everyone in the place to lose control as punters
were jumping in unison and throwing their fists in the
air to DJ Zinc's "Jammin". It was the perfect
ending to the night and a good representation of what
their party is all about.
