An interview with Vini

Orange Kush: Bring the Boogie

featured on 'Botchit Breaks 3'

[April 2000] With an artist stable that includes BLIM, T.Power, Orange Kush and FreQ.Nasty, London-based label Botchit & Scarper is undeniably one of the "nu skool breaks" scene's most important labels. 'Botchit Breaks 3', the next compilation CD from Botchit, will be out May 25th with promos already in the boxes of all the top DJs. DJ Dust caught up with label boss Vini - also a producer and international superstar deejay in his spare time. And of course Dust didn't neglect to ask about FreQ.Nasty's recent signing to Skint!

DJ Dust: Name ?

Vini: Vini Medley

DJ Dust: Age ?

Vini: Er...old enough to remember?

DJ Dust: Based ?

Vini: Earthbound, the London England bit.

DJ Dust: You run Botchit & Scarper - which artists are you working with?

Vini: FreQ.Nasty, BLIM, T-Power, Vini, Orange Kush, Raw Deal, Stone Drive, Tek Ed, Cosmic Jerk, Soto, Mee Violin...

DJ Dust: Do you or have recorded material under any project names?

Vini: Vini vs Funk Monster - 'Dominion'

DJ Dust: Whats going to be the difference between Botchit's 'Urban Funk' and 'Botchit Breaks 3' compilations?

Vini: Here at Botchit & Scarper / Emotif Recordings we release 3-5 compilations a year. In our view they are not the same as many compilations available on the market such as Speed Garage Hits/ Ibiza 99 etc, they are in fact label statement updates, in order for the lifestyle-buying punter to check out what their favourite label or club is doing. They are a good opportunity for us to update our fans with the best of our previous work along with brand new material from our established artists and they also give us a chance to break new talent. I think they differ very much from compilations that have been put together in a 'greatest hits of the scene' style. Therefore one's a comp, the other is a label statement.

DJ Dust: The recent departure of Freq Nasty to Skint, was that an amicable split?

Vini: No split, he's still working with us, the Skint deal is only exclusive as freQ. Nasty

DJ Dust: Any crazy things happened to you this year?

Vini: Broke my ankle - been pissed and sliding down an escalator 2 weeks ago.

DJ Dust: What made you happy this month?

Vini: Going to Berlin, the new Tek Ed single and only getting a broken ankle. Could've been much worse.

DJ Dust: How would you describe your DJ style?

Vini: Wide, encompassing, tasteful and fucking 'avin it.

DJ Dust: What do you think of the breaks scene both national and international?

Vini: Growing nicely worldwide, thank you very much. It ain't a London thing!!!!!!!!!!!

DJ Dust: What do you think is the future for breakbeat?

Vini: Daft, standard question, sorry. [Dust: I didn't do a journalism degree you know! I'm only a DJ and I`m not very good at that!!!] Techno, house, drum 'n' bass etcetera are still here and developing. Guess what we'll be doing.

DJ Dust: Forthcoming Botchit single releases?

Vini: Tek Ed - 'All blues', BLIM - 'Earth man'

DJ Dust: Albums?

Vini: Aquasky, Sure Shot, Vini vs Funk Monster, Botchit Breaks 3, T-Power.

DJ Dust: DJ mix albums ?

Vini: Knowledge [Bristol-based drum 'n' bass/breakbeat mag] front cover mix CD

DJ Dust: Anything else other people are doing that deserve a big up?

Vini: Love to all that are into our thing.
