Stabilizer

[August 2001]

Q: Name and age?

A: Stef Goodchild. 27.

Q: Where do you live? Where are you from originally?

A: Lived in Bath (Near Bristol in the SW of the UK) for about 4 years. Originally from the far flung south eastern suburbs of London, namely a place called Bromley. It was officially the most average place in the UK not so long ago and is the home town of Billy Idol... frightening...

Q: You've released so many good tunes lately, can you run us through them?

A: These are the original tunes released so far this year...

• What it Takes (Plastic Raygun Records)
• Electrophobic EP (Boombox Records)
• People Come Up (Functional Breaks)
• Pure Digital EP (Boombox Records)

And the remixes...

• Sensei "I'm The Only One" (Functional Breaks)
• Paul Reset "Self Sufficient" (Backroom Records)
• Scissorkicks "Everyday Thing" (Plastic Raygun Records)

Q: Who's playing your tunes?

A: I've been really lucky and had some pretty high profile support over the last year... Andrew Weatherall for 'What it Takes' which was really cool. Danny McMillan, Hybrid, Jody Way Out West and Krafty Kuts to name a few... Also I heard that Matthew 'Bushwacka!' B picked up a copy of the Electrophobic EP test pressing. To be honest it has surprised me a lot how much support I've had since the beginning. Caspar Kedros from the Headrillaz and Krafty Kutz have both been supportive since the first single and yet we've never even exchanged emails, so can I take this opportunity to say thanks!

Q: Were you a bit surprised at the overwhelming response to your new single on Plastic Raygun, "What It Takes"?

A: Yes! As a DJ I don't really stick to 'pure' breaks and tend to paddle around in the house end of the spectrum now and again so I wanted this single to reflect that a bit more. I think maybe people appreciated something that little bit different as it was the 'funk mix' that had the strongest reaction, which was a nice surprise for me as I thought maybe it'd be lost in the tidal wave of peaktime breaks that have been released over the last few months.

Q: Any truth to the rumour that you've been asked to remix Peter Gabriel?

A: LOL! Nope... Not true... Think I know where that rumour started... ;-)

Q: What else do you have coming up?

A: A new single called Carbon (on Functional Breaks) is due to drop really soon and has had some really good reactions from the test pressings that were sent out. Nearer the end of the year there is a full-on peak time electro/breaks tune on Boombox called Ambushed 2. On the remix front I remixed a Copesetic (Berlin based breaks producer) track called "Watergal" which is due anytime soon on Kosmo Records and there is a new DJ Crow single due on Boombox which I've remixed in a Flamenco/Breaks fashion!

Q: Album plans?

A: Yep, I'm going to start writing after my honeymoon this summer and it will be released on Plastic Raygun records next year. I'm really conscious of making an 'album' though, rather than a collection of dance floor tunes on a CD, so I'm going to be working hard getting loads of varied tracks in loads of different styles written so I can work at getting the pacing right. I've lined up a fantastic jazz vocalist called Claire to sing on one or two tracks and an amazing percussionist called Heron to perform on the album so far and I'll be talking to a few others to see if they would be interested in collaborating with me on a few tracks.

Q: Do you record under any other names?

A: Not at the moment. That's probably why it seems like I'm releasing loads of tunes this year! If you compare the numbers people like Lee Coombes, Mark Pember and Rennie Pilgrem I'm still in the little league!
