Koma & Bones

[August 2001]

Interview by

Suzie: Hi guys, thanx for taking time out to chat! You've really become high profile on the breaks scene over the past year or so, but you've been around for a lot longer, so tell me who you you are and where you've all come from musically.

Jude (Proteus): I came from a background that included all styles of music, but it was the drum 'n' bass where I really started to make a name.

Andy (Koma): Similar sort of thing really, but I came from the DJing side rather than the production angle.

Chris (Bones): I did nothing but go out clubbing, listening to Andy play. Bugger all really 'til I started DJing with Andy.

Suzie: I didn't realise until recently that there were three people in Koma & Bones! How did you all get together and how did the name Koma & Bones come about?

Andy: Jude was a good mate from way back, so when Chris and myself wanted to start making our own tracks, we naturally went to Jude for help.

Chris: The name thing is something that me and Andy used as our DJ names - I'm skinny as fuck, hence the name Bones, and Andy's a bit of a heavy sleeper. Once we went with that name, it sort of stuck and it was too late to change to another. Anyway, we would end up sounding like Crosby Stills and Nash if there were any more fucking names in the band.

Jude: Wankers!!!!!!!!

Suzie: Having spoken to you, I get the impression that you're all really down to earth and don't get caught up in some of the "bullshit" elements of the music biz. Do you think that this could be a Northern thing?

Chris: I don't know - maybe we are just a set of northern wankers.

Jude: We do our own thing and don't really give a shit about North and South.

Suzie: Following on from the previous question, what's been your most weird "showbiz" moment!? I've heard that Miami was a bit of an "experience" or is there something more bizarre?!

Chris: The best was at a local student club we were playing a few years ago in the backroom. We were just dropping a rather large track when a rather large student fell thru the ceiling right in front of the decks and onto the dancefloor.

Andy: When he came round he was asked why he was up there. He said, "I saw a hole and had to investigate"!

Jude: Bloody students.

Suzie: Going back to the Northern thing ( I'm from the North as well so I am excused for blathering on about it) - how hard have you found it trying to push or "do" breaks in the North? I know from personal experience that it has both its good and bad points, how do you feel about it?

Chris: We never really push or do anything for breaks in the North - we do it for ourselves and whoever really wants to listen.

Andy: Whoever wants our stuff, that's who we care about - not the North in particular.
