James Zabiela

"Progressive house is dead - long live the breaks!" Muzik magazine exclaims in its latest issue. Prog is "the latest byword for boring."

"Breaks is the new fancy of the previously progressive DJ. As the prog tag becomes tired, DJ's try to stay ahead of the game, and right now that means making - and playing - breaks," according to top UK dance mag Muzik.

Muzik claims well-known progressive DJs Danny Howells, Red Jerry and James Zabiela have all dropped prog in favour of house and breaks.

"There are only so many synth lines you can listen to again and again" James Zabiela was quoted as saying. "About 30% of my music is breaks now. I love the warped bassline of people like Meat Katie and Whole 9 Yards."

In a reaction posted on the message board of the Global Underground site (www.globalunderground.co.uk), James Zabiela says he says he was misquoted by Muzik and never claimed that progressive is dead.

Muzik and other British music mags are notorious for filling their pages by declaring dance music styles to be either dead as a doornail or the next big thing. In past years, both big beat and trance were declared dead by the mags, while electro (in its poppy electroclash guise) was recently hailed as the next big thing.

Sasha

Top progressive DJ Sasha is set to release his debut album on August 5th. The album, called "Airdrawndagger", is said to be highly focused on breaks - apparently only one of the 11 tracks is in 4/4 style while the rest is all breaks. Guest performers on the album include Dutch breaks and progressive house producer Junkie XL.

"Across the 11 tracks, there's the time and space to reflect his love for music that rarely gets the chance to shine in clubs, whether that's punishingly gnarly breakbeats or glittering modern classical film scores. It's a symphony for all ravers that grew up but never grew out of chasing that buzz," gushes an official press release posted on www.djsasha.com. Who writes this stuff??

Sasha's previous dabblings in breaks include the single "Xpander" (co-produced by Andy Page) and the fondly remembered remix of Hysterix' "Talk To Me" on Deconstruction.

Nu Breed

Australian progressive breaks/house act Nu Breed have signed an album deal with Tayo's UK based label Mob Records. The lads have already released a remix of Jasp 182's "Millennium Dawn" on Mob and are about to release their first single on the label, "Ionosphere" / "Beats and Rhymes".

Nu Breed broke through internationally with their brilliant remix of Apex - "Symmetry" on Marine Parade last year. They have recently remixed "Stealth" for Way Out West, reworked Skunk Anansie and had a track included on Dave Seaman's "Global Underground" CD.

"Expect a whole lot more from this talented trio (including a stunning live show) over the next few months," according to Mob Records.

Global Underground

The latest CD in the succesful Global Underground series was released last month. Mixed by Dave Seaman, the "Melbourne" double CD offers breakbeat tracks from Nu Breed, Frakkar (a new breaks project featuring Hybrid's live drummer), Infusion and Phil K's Lo-Step project, among others.

Due on on June 21st, the next "Global Underground" is called "Barcelona" and was mixed by James Lavelle. Expect an eclectic selection with plenty of breaks - James' FabricLive CD featured tunes from Meat Katie, Plump DJ's and Bushwacka! as well as that Adam Freeland fave, Forme - "Kick A Hole".

Rumous has it that DJ Hyper, the man behind the "Y3K" CDs and recent "Bedrock Breaks" CD, has been approached about mixing an upcoming "Global Underground" CD.

Akademia

Sheffield (UK) based progressive label Choo Choo Recordings has launched a sister label for breaks called Akademia Recordings.

Managed by Dean Muhsin aka DJ Filth, Akademia kicked off in April with "Drop Zone" by Hyper Tension (a project of DJ Hyper's), featuring a remix by TCR's Breakneck. Next up are Vigi & Flip with "Proteen" - rumoured to be their last-ever joint release.

"We’ve always dabbled in breakbeats as producers, and after the success of 'Desanitize' which we did for Acetate Ltd, it seemed natural to look further into the scene," Sarah Whittaker-Gilbey told progressive-house.com. Sarah is Choo Choo's label manager and part of progressive house/breaks act Mara. "Dean is Choo Choo’s promotions manager and it seemed like we were having the same ideas of where to go, so the concept was born."

"It’s wicked to be running a breaks label with likeminded people," Dean told progressive-sounds.com. "Being involved with one of the best underground house labels in the world is no bad thing either!"

Forthcoming releases on Akademia will come from Bad Cop, Wrecked Angle (aka Russel Pearce and Steve Gerrard), Caustic Soda, Das & Dj Welten and DJ Filth himself.

Electroclash

New York's flamboyant electroclash darlings Fischerspooner were trashed by the British media after their first-ever live performance in the UK, according to skrufff.com.

Following their London show, both Music Week and the Guardian compared Fischerspooner to ridiculous Eighties band Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

"It is as if Sigue Sigue Sputnik have been cast in a regional production of Starlight Express," the Guardian sniffed, while the Standard concluded that, "Fischerspooner are not really for people who love music."

The Chemical Brothers also trashed Fischerspooner and other electroclash artists. In an interview with British mag NME, the Chems branded DJ Tiga's "Sunglasses At Night" as crap and said Fischerspooner were pretty unremarkable, according to inthemix.com.au.

The Chems counterattacked after electroclash main man Larry Tee put them down in a recent interview.

"The Chemical Brothers' time is over!" Tee reportedly said. "We don't want musicians who look like your mates. Electroclash is about music that you can relate to and stars that you want to fuck."

Electroclash is the name of the festival which Larry Tee and DJ Hell, head honcho of Munich (Germany) based electro label International Deejay Gigolos, put on in New York last fall, and Tee also uses the name to describe New York's new kitschy electro scene which has the A&Rs in a feeding frenzy, with Fischerspooner reportedly signing to Ministry of Sound in the UK recently for a whopping £2 million. Electrocash!

Larry Tee is a well-known figure on the New York club scene and was behind Keoki's legendary Disco 2000 night as well as RuPaul's "Supermodel" hit.

"Everyone's looking to New York for the first time in a long time," he said, predicting that, "From beginning to burnout, we have a good four more years. We haven't hit mainstream America yet."

Fischerspooner's "Emerge" is out now in the UK with a new 4/4 techno remix by Dave Clarke, apparently a staunch supporter of the duo.

Montreal (Canada) based DJ Tiga recently revealed just how long it took him to make "Sunglasses At Nite", an electro cover of a Corey Hart song, it became in a top 10 hit across Europe this spring. When a reporter from worldpop.com asked him if it took him one day to make, he revealed that, "You overshot it by about 23 hours."

Los Angeles-based Manifesto Records is launching its new electronic leaning label Orbisonic (www.orbisonic.com) with an electroclash compilation called "definingTECH". Out now, the CD features Fischerspooner, Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Peaches, Adult, Mr. Velcro Fastener, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Felix Da Housecat, plus lesser knows like Memory Boy a.k.a. John Selway, Shapeshiftr & The Sentinel, Dexter, Innate and Bug Orchestra.

In the UK, Sony's dance label Inc-redible (www.inc-redible.com) is also jumping on the bandwagon with a "nuwave electro" compilation titled "This Is Not The 80's". Out now, the CD features tracks from Goldenboy, Adult., Miss Kitten & The Hacker and Detroit Grand Pubahs. Compilation of the month in Mixmag.

The Propellerheads

Wall of Sound's The Propellerheads are making their long-awaited comeback with a new album due out next year, featuring some unexpected guests.

The Props (Alex Gifford and Will White) have recruited Debbie Harry, KD Lang, Rufus Wainwright and Joey Arias as vocalists on their new album, the followup to their superb 1998 debut "Decksanddrumsandrockandroll" which featured a guest vocal by Shirley Bassey.

"I guess you could say we’ve been experimenting. About the time the last record came out, it just seemed [that there was] a saturation of similar kinds of music so we just started to poke around in slightly different directions to see what we could come up with," Alex Gifford told Rolling Stone magazine. The new album will apparently have more of a soulful, R&B influenced sound.

"She’s such a sweetheart and such an icon," Gifford said of Blondie's Debbie Harry. "I've got an amazing song for her, the thing is to write songs for people, for that singer particularly, not one that suits their voice, but their personality."

In addition, New York drag queen Joey Arias sings on "Lately" while Canadians KD Lang and Rufus Wainwright sing a duet on another track.
